Blanket Size Calculator
Pick a blanket size (or enter your own) and get the exact cast-on and row count from your gauge.
Cast on 180 sts × 312 rows
How to use
- Choose a preset blanket size to fill in a typical width and length, or enter your own target dimensions directly.
- Enter your stitch gauge: the stitch count and the width you measured it over, matching whichever unit (cm or in) you are working in.
- Enter your row gauge the same way: the row count and the height you measured it over.
- Read the result — the stitch count to cast on and the number of rows to work to reach your target width and length.
Good to know
- A blanket needs both a stitch gauge and a row gauge, unlike a simple width calculation, because the finished piece has to match a target length as well as a target width.
- The size presets are common reference dimensions, not a fixed standard — blanket sizing varies a lot by household and pattern, so treat them as a starting point and adjust to taste.
- Leave a small allowance for a border or edging and for blocking: many stitch patterns relax or draw in when blocked, so swatch, block it the same way you plan to block the finished blanket, and measure gauge after that step.
FAQ
- Why does this calculator need a row gauge as well as a stitch gauge?
- Width is controlled by stitch count and stitch gauge, but length is controlled separately by row count and row gauge. Without a row gauge, there is no way to know how many rows reach a given length.
- Are the blanket size presets a real standard?
- They are commonly used reference dimensions (crib, throw, twin and so on), not an official standard — actual blanket sizes vary between patterns and households, so use a preset as a starting point and measure your own target if you have one in mind.
- Should I add extra stitches or rows for a border?
- This calculator computes the stitches and rows for the body of the blanket at your target size. If your pattern adds a border or edging afterward, that is usually worked separately and does not need to be added to these counts.
- Does this work for crochet blankets too?
- Yes. Swatch in your crochet stitch, measure both stitch and row gauge the same way, and the math for foundation chain length and row count works identically to knitting.
