Gauge Conversion Calculator

Your gauge doesn't match the pattern? Recalculate any stitch count to fit.

Cast on 182 sts

200 sts at pattern gauge → 182 sts at your gauge

Both gauges must be measured over the same width — 10cm (4in) is the standard swatch.

How to use

  1. Knit or crochet a swatch and count how many stitches you get over 10cm (4in).
  2. Enter the stitch count the pattern specifies, the pattern's gauge, and your own gauge — measured over the same width.
  3. The result is the stitch count that gives you the same finished size at your gauge.
  4. Repeat for row counts if your row gauge also differs — the same ratio applies.

Good to know

  • The two gauges must be measured over the same width (both per 10cm or both per 4in) — the calculator uses their ratio, so the unit itself does not matter.
  • Rounding to the nearest stitch can shift the finished size by a few millimetres; round toward the nearest pattern-repeat multiple if your stitch pattern needs one.
  • Changing needle size is often easier than recalculating a whole pattern — try matching gauge first, and convert only when you like your fabric as it is.

FAQ

Why does gauge matter so much?
A difference of just 2 stitches per 10cm on a 50cm-wide sweater is a 4–5cm size difference. Converting stitch counts (or matching gauge) is what keeps the finished measurements true to the pattern.
Can I use stitches per inch instead of per 10cm?
Yes — as long as both gauges use the same width. The calculator only uses the ratio between them, so per-inch and per-10cm both work.
Do I need to convert row counts too?
If the pattern says "knit for 20cm" you can just measure. But when it counts rows (e.g. for sleeve shaping), convert row counts with the same tool using row gauge.
